Microsoft Outlook Express Support Ending

Posted on April 22, 2008. Filed under: Service Bulletin, Software | Tags: , , , , , , , |

Please be advised that Microsoft is ending its support for Microsoft Outlook Express and if you are a Hotmail customer you may be affected. Outlook Express is the free email client that came with Windows XP. One of the functions this email client (program) allowed was if you had a Microsoft Hotmail account you could set up Outlook Express to receive your Hotmail emails into Outlook Express.

Who is Affected?

Any person using a Hotmail.com, Hotmail.ca, Bell Sympatico or other Microsoft affiliated email service who is using Microsoft Outlook Express email program in Windows XP SP 2 and Vista to access their email.

How Do I Tell What Email Program I am Using?

  • If you click on a short cut or program icon that says Outlook Express.
  • If you open an email program to get your Hotmail email and select Help, About there should be a dialogue box telling you are using Outlook Express version X.x.

How do I know if this affects me?

If you have a Hotmail account and have been using Outlook Express to access it (which I was up until about 2 months ago) somehow Microsoft has a record of this and you will get an email like this:

dear-microsoft-outlook-express-customer

Why are they doing this?

Basically because the security protocol used in this type of email program is outdated.

What do I need to do?

  1. Remember and note your Hotmail account settings such as your Hotmail email address and the password. This is particularly important if you have set up Hotmail to renew the password at regular intervals.
  2. Make sure you have updated Windows XP to SP 2 level. How to:  Start, Control Panel, System Properties, General Tab and look under the System: heading.
  3. Prepare to update your email client software. I would recommend backing up your contact list and emails locally before updating.
  4. Download and install the Windows Live Mail Software from here…
  5. Take a look at the blog about Windows Live Mail to get some idea of the differences.
  6. If you do use Outlook Express and want to use a seperate email client to access your emails you need to update before June 30, 2008.

Should I upgrade?

Sure. The reviews I have read indicate greater overall email security and functionality so I do not see any reason not to…thing is…if you are a Hotmail user using Outlook Express and don’t you will not get any more emails from your Hotmail account.
